Ulla-Maija Ma World Music Project 1 (working title)
is a separate project, but related to the book project, 'Lotus of Lapland: The Material & Spiritual Life of Ulla-Maija Ma'. The two projects enhance each other. Later, they will offer opportunities for presenting both together in interesting live events.
The project is a world music album which will introduce a new, innovative, intercultural world music based on Indian devotional and classical music, as well as Western music.
The album is performed by Ulla-Maija Kivimäki and other musicians, who all have Western and Indian classical music education and experience, and they will play Indian instruments using their own techniques. The music will be attractive to Western and Eastern ears and especially interesting to the many millions of yoga students, who have already adopted Kirtan and Sanskrit mantra chanting and made it a new and growing world music category around the world.
The project is an example, how the Indian system can be adapted with freedom and creativity into an exciting world music with haunting raga melodies and sophisticated rhythmic patterns, talas, such as 7, 10 and 12-beat rhythms. The music includes new forms of bhajan -devotional songs- and kirtan chanting -call-and-response singing with the audience. Words include ancient poetry from the 13th & 15th century India, as well as new poetry in English. Sanskrit is the dominant language, but also included are English, Braj-bhasha (old Hindi) and old Bengali. Sample of previous work
A short documentary video will be produced of the making of the album, as part of the project.
Ulla-Maija has previously produced three world-music albums for the Society for Universal Sacred Music and one for Amalam Media, and many music videos, concerts, two music festivals and various events. Her resume.
